The iPhoneography of Meri Walker in Our Salon and “Shower of Flowers” on Our Feature Wall
Seeing Can Be Harder Than It Looks…
“But if you know how to handle your Smartphone camera – and use the best apps – you can turn your iPhone…into a full-featured ‘pocket studio’ where you make images that draw people into your story.” So begins Meri Walker’s Joy of iPhoneography on her Website: theiphoneartgirl.com.
iPhoneography, or iPhone art, is a new and really exciting field of artistic expression. Meri Walker, whose work is internationally exhibited, is one of its early creative innovators. Art du Jour Gallery is proud to host an exhibit of Meri’s iPhone artwork in our Salon during April and May. Don’t miss it!
“Despite the apparent ease of making pictures with a mobile phone,” Meri says, “my iPhoneography practice provides anything but instant gratification. Capturing, editing and sharing mobile images is a rich pleasure- and meaning-making process that takes…sometimes quite a lot of time. The efforts bring me a sense of joy and a depth of emotional and intellectual connection to my life – and to the lives of others – that I never imagined possible before I started using an iPhone to make ‘serious’ pictures.”
Meri has been creating iPhone art for the last six years, and she has been a photographer and printmaker for over 40 years. Her prints are included in numerous public and private collections across the U.S. and Europe and she has received more than 50 awards and grants in support of her creative work. She is well-regarded as a teacher and creativity coach, having served in colleges and arts workshops across the U.S. and recently as a juror for three international mobile art competitions. A portfolio of Meri’s metamorphous floral works is on display at the Harvard Medical School in Boston.
“The iPhone is the first camera/word processor to keep up with my way of seeing and the speed of my thoughts and feelings,” Meri says. “With it in my pocket, I’m reminded to keep my eyes and ears open as I walk around. Or sit somewhere. The camera, microphone and art-making tools support me being with myself in my personal experience. Being my own witness. And then, when I’m ready, sharing it with others, right from my ‘camera.’”
We invite you to visit Art du Jour Galley’s Salon this month and let us share with you the special beauty and creative technology of Meri Walker’s iPhone art. It is mind-blowing.
