NEWEST GALLERY ARTIST: Oil Painter John Acosta
Medford artist John Acosta, Art du Jour Gallery’s newest member, is an oil painter whose work is bold, exciting, masculine, and often spiritual in theme. His style is entirely his own. John is self-taught and has been painting in oils for only four years, yet his work shows the passion and innate talent of a painter destined to become a fine artist. We hope you will visit Art du Jour in January and view John’s work. “My Defender” is a dream-like but unmistakable vision of Jesus, “Travertino Façade” is a beautiful and detailed rendering of Rome’s Colosseum, and “Brenda” is a saucy feline with mischief in her eyes. Of the three other oil paintings that complete John’s current display, “Hope and Despair” is the most emotionally engaging. It takes you into a glistening, cave-like darkness rendered in thick, strong strokes of oil paint, giving you the perspective of someone striving toward the brilliant light ahead at the mouth of the cavern. The effect is deeply stirring.
IN THE SALON: Versatile Multi-Media Artist Kim Faucher
In our Salon until the end of January is special guest artist Kim Faucher. Kim enjoys drawing and working in oils, acylics, watercolor and mixed media. Her theme for her Salon exhibit is Experimentation. “Observation and experimentation are the guides I follow on my art path,” she says. “I am forever developing the ability to observe. Experimentation brings freedom and joy to my art process.” The joy she feels in creating her art is obvious. She enjoys the transparency and watery movement of watercolor, but is moved by the buttery smoothness and drama of oils.
Kim Faucher (pronounced “Foh-shay”) was born in Paynes Creek, a tiny community west of Mt. Lassen in Northern California, and lived with her family in a converted chicken house with dirt floor, no electricity and no running water. Kim developed her deep appreciation of nature running wild through the remote volcanic terrain. Then, sitting on a small stool in her father’s small sawmill, surrounded by piles of mill ends, she would draw on the smooth planed wood with a thick carpenter’s pencil. Kim has since taken classes locally and all over the United States as well as in Italy.
Kim belongs to several professional art organizations including Watercolor Society of Oregon, Artists Workshop of Southern Oregon, and Southern Oregon Association of Artists. In 2012, she was selected as Artist in Residence at Crater Lake National Park. Her project “The Bluest Blue” combined watercolor with poetry to address climate change. Tuesday mornings in her studio, Leaping Turtle, Kim hosts a group of artists for the sharing of art space, ideas, feedback, and support.
Included in Kim’s Salon exhibit are “Sunflower Symphony” and “Anthurium with Mangos,” paintings that represent her love of nature. The painting “Storm Coming” displays her skill with looseness of brush strokes and brilliant use of color. Come into the gallery to see her lovely pieces.
